Congrats to Jackie Nicoll, our April Athlete of the Month. Read her story below:

What was your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

 Before joining Outsiders, I was a member of an area gym doing a mix of cardio and boot camp type workouts.

When did you first start at Outsiders?

I first started Outsiders at the very end of 2015. 

Your husband and children also do CrossFit at Outsiders. How has this impacted your family?

I have two teenage children (13 and 17) who are members during the winter and summer months (they are busy with sports during the fall and spring months).   My husband and I both have unlimited memberships.   I love being able to do CrossFit with my family!  It provides us with another connection which is so important in our busy lives.  Although we may be at different levels & may attend different classes, we talk about the WODS and like to compare notes.  I’ll never forget a Saturday morning partner workout that I did with my 17 year-old son.  We were doing Squat Cleans, and he was encouraging me:  “Mom, you can do it.  Just 2 more.”  Talk about a change in roles!  As for my husband, it has been great for our relationship.  We often do the partner workouts together on Saturday mornings.  It is so fun.  We laugh, we sweat, and we laugh some more!

What is your favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit?

My favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit is the way I feel when I walk out of  the door.  I always feel happy and accomplished!  It does not matter how I feel when I walk in, the feeling I have upon leaving is always positive.  There are several factors that contribute to this feeling.  I love the challenge each class provides, I love that each day is a different WOD, I love that we can track our results and monitor our progress…  I like that there is strategy with some of the workouts – trying to decide how much to push yourself or how many reps to shoot for of a certain movement…  I like that we can learn about food and nutrition if we want to participate in the food challenges.  I love when Stan writes inspirational quotes on the white board or shares his messages of encouragement before a workout.  I love that the Coaches are so well trained that they can tell you one simple thing to change/improve, and all of the sudden, the movement is easier.  Last, but certainly not least, I love the comradery among the members and Coaches of  Outsiders.  The people at Outsiders truly make this a magical place. 

What is one goal that you have this year?

 I am getting closer and closer to doing double unders.  I’d like to finally master them and then concentrate on kipping pull ups.

What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

If you are interested, give it a try and keep an open mind.  If you are not coming from another Crossfit gym, the workouts are probably going to be very different than what you have done before.  I think that as a new member, you should be willing to give Outsiders a try for at least 3-6 months.  It will take some time to become use to the various CrossFit movements and to get adjusted to the different types of workouts.  Even though I have been a member for over a year, I still learn something new in each class.  The Coaches do a tremendous job of helping us practice good form to achieve maximum results.  Just know that there are going to be some workouts that you are comfortable with and some that are out of your comfort zone.  Just work through them all.  You will amaze yourself with your accomplishments.  

What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

My greatest improvement has to be my strength.  Looking at the weight I was lifting when I started compared to the weight I am lifting now is incredible.  I am also continuing to learn how to exert maximum effort in a short amount of time for the shorter workouts.  That has been a skill I have had to develop.   My physique has also changed over the past year.  I have muscles now that I did not have before!  This is obviously due in a large part to the exercise I am doing at Outsiders, but I believe it is also due to the fact that I am eating much better  now than I was before joining Outsiders.  As a result of doing one of the fitness challenges, I have learned to eat more whole foods, healthy fats, less processed foods, etc.   As a result of my overall experience at Outsiders, which is truly more than just the exercise part, I am doing things today (in and out of the gym) that I did not think I could do – I have found a confidence that has made each day a little easier.  None of this has happened over night, of course.  It has happened one day at a time.  As someone really smart once said, practice makes progress!
