Congrats to Jackie Nicoll, our April Athlete of the Month. Read her story below:

What was your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

 Before joining Outsiders, I was a member of an area gym doing a mix of cardio and boot camp type workouts.

When did you first start at Outsiders?

I first started Outsiders at the very end of 2015. 

Your husband and children also do CrossFit at Outsiders. How has this impacted your family?

I have two teenage children (13 and 17) who are members during the winter and summer months (they are busy with sports during the fall and spring months).   My husband and I both have unlimited memberships.   I love being able to do CrossFit with my family!  It provides us with another connection which is so important in our busy lives.  Although we may be at different levels & may attend different classes, we talk about the WODS and like to compare notes.  I’ll never forget a Saturday morning partner workout that I did with my 17 year-old son.  We were doing Squat Cleans, and he was encouraging me:  “Mom, you can do it.  Just 2 more.”  Talk about a change in roles!  As for my husband, it has been great for our relationship.  We often do the partner workouts together on Saturday mornings.  It is so fun.  We laugh, we sweat, and we laugh some more!

What is your favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit?

My favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit is the way I feel when I walk out of  the door.  I always feel happy and accomplished!  It does not matter how I feel when I walk in, the feeling I have upon leaving is always positive.  There are several factors that contribute to this feeling.  I love the challenge each class provides, I love that each day is a different WOD, I love that we can track our results and monitor our progress…  I like that there is strategy with some of the workouts – trying to decide how much to push yourself or how many reps to shoot for of a certain movement…  I like that we can learn about food and nutrition if we want to participate in the food challenges.  I love when Stan writes inspirational quotes on the white board or shares his messages of encouragement before a workout.  I love that the Coaches are so well trained that they can tell you one simple thing to change/improve, and all of the sudden, the movement is easier.  Last, but certainly not least, I love the comradery among the members and Coaches of  Outsiders.  The people at Outsiders truly make this a magical place. 

What is one goal that you have this year?

 I am getting closer and closer to doing double unders.  I’d like to finally master them and then concentrate on kipping pull ups.

What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

If you are interested, give it a try and keep an open mind.  If you are not coming from another Crossfit gym, the workouts are probably going to be very different than what you have done before.  I think that as a new member, you should be willing to give Outsiders a try for at least 3-6 months.  It will take some time to become use to the various CrossFit movements and to get adjusted to the different types of workouts.  Even though I have been a member for over a year, I still learn something new in each class.  The Coaches do a tremendous job of helping us practice good form to achieve maximum results.  Just know that there are going to be some workouts that you are comfortable with and some that are out of your comfort zone.  Just work through them all.  You will amaze yourself with your accomplishments.  

What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

My greatest improvement has to be my strength.  Looking at the weight I was lifting when I started compared to the weight I am lifting now is incredible.  I am also continuing to learn how to exert maximum effort in a short amount of time for the shorter workouts.  That has been a skill I have had to develop.   My physique has also changed over the past year.  I have muscles now that I did not have before!  This is obviously due in a large part to the exercise I am doing at Outsiders, but I believe it is also due to the fact that I am eating much better  now than I was before joining Outsiders.  As a result of doing one of the fitness challenges, I have learned to eat more whole foods, healthy fats, less processed foods, etc.   As a result of my overall experience at Outsiders, which is truly more than just the exercise part, I am doing things today (in and out of the gym) that I did not think I could do – I have found a confidence that has made each day a little easier.  None of this has happened over night, of course.  It has happened one day at a time.  As someone really smart once said, practice makes progress!

Congrats to our February Featured Athlete, Dana Beziat! Read her story below:

1. What was your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

I have belonged to a gym most of my adult life and worked out 4-5 times a week doing Spin, body pump, TRX classes and assorted weight machines and cardio.  I stopped working out about 5 years ago when I was put on bed rest during my first pregnancy.  Baby number 2 followed 14 months later and I kept putting off going back to the gym because I thought I should be home more with my kids and just didn't think there was time to fit it in.  I finally decided I missed the gym and was not happy with my weight gain over the years so I rejoined a regular gym last April.

2. When did you first start at Outsiders?

I found some of the classes at the gym boring and was not getting the results I was hoping for.  My friend Devon Troop kept telling me how much she enjoyed crossfit and what a great place Outsiders was.  In July of last year I gave it a try for a month and was hooked!

3. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

My thoughts about the first workout were that I couldn't believe I worked so hard in just 8 minutes!  

4. What is your favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit?

 My favorite thing about Outsiders are the people!  The coaches are knowledgeable, supportive, and helpful.  Other gym members are also supportive and everyone is always encouraging each other to do their best and get to the next level or just to make it to the end of a tough workout.  We have so much fun!

5. What is one goal that you have this year?

I have three goals I hope to accomplish by my one year anniversary... T2B, kipping pull-ups, and consistent DUs.

6. What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

Anyone can do crossfit.  Everything can be scaled for success and it's fun to challenge yourself and continue improving.

7. What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

 My greatest improvement would be that I feel really good!  Every morning when I am finished the work out I feel like I have already accomplished something that day.  I have lots of extra energy during the day, which helps me be a better wife, mom, and teacher.

Congrats to our Athlete of the Month, Marie Dias! It has been amazing to watch her progress over the past 11 months. Read her story below.

1. What was your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

 

Worked out in my basement, treadmill, body pump 3-5 times a week. Have belonged to gyms in the past but got bored very quickly.

2. When did you first start at Outsiders?

February 16th 2016

3. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

I am glad I survived! I want to do this again! I was really nervous that I would not be able to complete that first  workout but quickly realized that with the help of the coaches, I could scale everything to my level.

4. What is your favorite thing about Outsiders CrossFit?

Without a doubt the people! I reconnected with some old friends and made a lot of new ones. The encouragement from everyone keeps me coming back. I have never once felt that I don't belong there because I am not (fill in the blank) fast enough, strong enough, fit enough...

Another great thing is that Outsiders is about family...I love that I get to workout with my husband a couple of times a week (and my daughter before she left for college). I love that we can be on this wellness journey together!

I have probably had a class with almost every coach and cannot say enough good things about each of them...I feel that I get a personal coaching session in a class setting. They have a passion for what they are doing and it shows!

5. What is one goal that you have this year?

It is tough to pick one! I want to continue working on my endurance, get stronger, continue to show up consistently and get my kipping motion down so I can progress from there! 

6. What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

Don't overthink it! If you have health/fitness goals, just step outside your comfort zone and get a little uncomfortable. No changes happen in your comfort zone! (I know because working out in my basement was my comfort zone). I am a mom of 3 with no prior athletic background but I knew that I wanted to make some changes. I promise that if I can do it, anyone can do it. Just commit before each workout that you will be better than the day before. At Outsiders, YOU are your only competition. Show up! When you work out in an environment that is positive, welcoming and challenging, you will keep coming back and you will see results!

7. What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

Back in February when I started at Outsiders, I filled out 5 personal goals that I wanted to achieve...more endurance, more tone, look/feel better in my clothes, become more disciplined about fitness, create new friendships. In 11 months, I have achieved ALL of them so I guess it's time to set new goals! Also, starting your day off (I love my 8am class!) at Outsiders, mentally sets you up for a positive day where you can accomplish more! I am grateful to those that encouraged me last January and said "you should do this". Thank you!

SAVE THE DATE - 4th annual Christmas Throwdown and Party on Saturday, December 17th!
The Throwdown will be from 9am-12:30pm. The last day to sign up to participate is today (12/2). We will place you on a team. It is a ton of fun and for ALL members of ALL levels! Christmas Party will start at 6:30pm. 

Starting next Monday, 12/5, we will be having an 8am class 5 days/week, Monday-Friday!
