April Athlete of the Month - Kerri Whalen

We are so proud of our April Athlete of the Month, Kerri Whalen! Her results have been astounding and her hardwork is surely paying off. She is a staple at the 5:30am crew and we know it wouldn't be the same without her!!

1. What was your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

Before joining Outsiders, I was doing some weight training and running/cycling. I was working out at home and finding it hard to stay motivated to work out by myself in my basement every day. My daughter was doing the JV class at Outsiders and I finally decided to bite the bullet and join myself. I was worried about the class schedule and not making it work into our home schedule but once I signed up, I just made it work. I am lucky to have a super supportive husband who knew how important this was to me and helped me make it work.

2. When did you first start at Outsiders?

I have been at Outsiders for almost a year to the day. I can’t really remember what life was like before =)

3. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?

There are so many things I love about CrossFit it’s hard to pick just one favorite. I think the best part for me is that the workouts are as much a mental workout as they are a physical workout. It was hard when I first started to almost strip away everything I had done before and start with light weight and really work on learning the movements. It was very humbling and really good for me – even though I didn’t want to admit that at first. I love that every day the workouts are a little bit different and there is ALWAYS something to work on and get better at. Some days I leave feeling amazing and some days I leave feeling totally frustrated and defeated and learning to be okay with both of these feelings has been hard but so worth it.  

I couldn’t talk about what I love about CrossFit without mentioning the community. I have met some of the nicest, funniest, most encouraging people at Outsiders and my #530crew has been fantastic to get to know and start my day with and from that crew I have developed some pretty amazing friendships with people I never would have met if had not been for Outsiders.

I definitely can’t leave out the amazing coaches. Coach Lance was by my side from day one helping to tweak my movements, work with me on intensity and really kept me working and committed to getting a little better every day. Coach Travis has believed in me since the first day I started and always manages to make me laugh – which some mornings is quite an accomplishment.  

4. What is one goal that you have in the next year?

This is easy – kipping pull ups and consistent, strung together, double unders.

5. What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

Just start. Don’t worry about not being in shape or what people will think. Just start. Commit to going to class every day and just working on getting a little bit better at one thing every time you show up. Encourage others and let them encourage you. Before you know it you will be stronger and faster than you thought you could be and you will have become a part of a community that you are not quite sure how you lived without. Just start. That’s all.

6. What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

I am definitely stronger and faster than when I started and the last couple of months I have been better at tracking my workouts in Zen planner and can see the results and improvements in time and weight. I think my biggest change/result is actually from dialing in my nutrition. Coach Stan referred me to Stronger U about 6 months ago and I started tracking macros and being super diligent about my nutrition. I started Stronger U hoping to lose some of the weight I could not get off which did happen but what also happened that I didn’t plan on was gaining control over my diet/nutrition and seeing how that really improves and helps with performance, energy, sleep and mood. I never really totally bought into the link between proper fuel/nutrition and performance until I started Outsiders and Stronger U and now I definitely do and that has been a total game changer for me. I am super grateful!
