August Athlete of the Month - Brian Stamp

Our August Featured Athlete is someone who has been with us for 3 years. His never ceasing positive outlook, consistent focus on perfecting the movements, and constant dedication toward his health over the years have served him well. You can now find him hitting PRs and crushing double unders and butterfly pull-ups. Along with being an inspiring athlete himself, he never passes an opportunity to lend a helping hand to a newer CrossFit athlete. Keep up the amazing work Brian!
 
1. What is your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?
Prior to joining Outsiders, I was mostly a runner.  I would train for and run two half-marathons a year.  I also did the typical gym routine where I would work a different muscle groups on different days.  Back and Biceps, Chest and Triceps, and so on.
 
2. When did you first start at Outsiders?
Three Years ago next month (September).  My wife encouraged me to try it after she read that it could improve my running.
 
3. What were your thoughts during/after your first workout? 
When I came in for the first class, I thought I was in pretty decent shape due to my running regimen.  I was quickly humbled.  I don't remember the exact movements in my first workout, but I do remember being sore for about a week.  I was using muscles that were never worked while running.
 
4. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?
I have a lot of favorite things about CrossFit, but I would have to put my coaches and fellow athletes at the top of the list.  They are all really good people.  They make it fun to come to class and cheer you on when you are pushing yourself through a tough workout.
 
5. What is one goal that you have this year?
I had two goals this year that I conquered already.  One was to Rx Fran for the first time and the other was to be able to do double unders in the workouts.  My new goal is to get my first ring muscle up. 
 
6. What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?
Understand that CrossFit is all about a process.   No one enters the box on the first day knowing how to do all of the movements so you shouldn't expect to either.   Learn the fundamentals of CrossFit and expand from there.   Everyone has a different learning curve.  Outsiders has a great set of coaches who will help you learn and reach your fitness goals.
 
7. What do you see as your greatest results from doing CrossFit?
Overall, I am physically fitter than I have ever been.  My nutrition views have been overhauled.   I lost 20 unhealthy pounds in my first year and have since added some back in the form of muscle.  I now know what I need to eat to perform at my best at CrossFit and reach my next goal.
