July Featured Athlete - Ken Bowden

Ken always has a smile on his face, always works super hard, always supports others in class, and always has something positive to say. He is just an all around great guy and athlete. It has been really inspiring to watch his progress since starting CrossFit!

1. What is your fitness background prior to joining Outsiders?

I swam competitively from pre-school up until high school. In high school I played football and threw the shotput and discus. I didn't play sports in college but after I graduated I got into ultra running and obstacle course racing.

2. When did you first start at Outsiders?

3. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

I remember being very surprised at how engaged all the coaches were. I've had a few personal trainers at bigger gyms and none of them ever seemed as engaged and attentive as the Outsiders coaches. You can really tell that the they love what they do and are really invested in helping each individual improve.

4. What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?

The community. I can't say enough good things about the people I've met through CrossFit. I always have such a blast at every class because of them. Stan and Jessica have created the perfect environment where people can have a lot of fun but also be working super hard at the same time.

5. What is one goal that you have this year?

Double unders (jumping rope where the rope rotates twice in one jump). I think I will be happy if I am able to string together 10 by the end of the year.

6. What is one piece of advice that you would give someone considering Outsiders CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

One of the best things about CrossFit is that every movement can be scaled to the individual's ability. This means that a class can have a wide variety of people from all fitness levels but everyone is doing the same workout. So my advice would be to come into it with an open mind and I think you will be really surprised at what you can accomplish.

 7. What do you see as your greatest improvement as well as some other results from doing CrossFit?

My greatest improvement has surprisingly been nutrition. I used to think that my nutrition was okay but with the some guidance from Stan and Jessica, I've really been able to nail it down which has lead to better workouts and recovery. I've also become much better at pull ups and olympic weightlifting.
