August Athlete of the Month - Patty Abbott
Published August 10, 2015
We love having Patty as a part of our Outsiders community! She adds a whole bunch of positivity and energy to every class she attends. It has been inspiring to see her progress over the past 6 months. She has embraced the journey of health and fitness and has also spread that passion to her daugthers. Read her story below!
1. Tell us a little about yourself (job, interests, hobbies, family)
I feel great about saying that I am starting my 30th year of teaching! I have been lucky enough to work at Pinewood Elementary for the last 23 years. My husband, Duane, and I have twin daughters who are 20. They are starting their Junior year at Michigan State University. They play field hockey there, and MSU is my alma mater. Most of my immediate family still resides in Michigan. The only true hobby I have is reading...I do this on the long trips to MSU!
2. When did you first join Outsiders? Were you active prior to joining?
I joined Outsiders in late February of this year. I was active, in that I went to the gym, walked many miles, and was working to find what worked for me. I found out I had osteoporosis, so I knew weight training had to be a more integral part of my routine.
3. What were your thoughts after your first workout? Is it what you expected?
The first workout was much better than I expected. I was a bit nervous, as everything was so new to me. I had no idea that I would have so much support! Chad was the coach, and he instantly put me at ease, letting me know he would help me. EVERY Coach and EVERY athlete at Outsiders that night, helped me! They helped me set up, they were encouraging, they were so helpful in showing me the ropes from the first class.
4. To you, what makes Outsiders CrossFit so special?
Outsiders is special because of the people, first and foremost. It is easy to say this, but as soon as you meet someone, the people involved show you they care about you and your progress. Outsiders is also special because it does not matter what your goals may be, or what your starting fitness level may be, the Coaches make sure they know you and care about your success. It is not just a focus on the extremely fit, (who will amaze you!) there is a focus on everyone. I'm not sure how they do this, but there is such a culture of caring and kindness. It is infectious. When my daughters came home from college this summer, Outsiders became such an important part of their training. They miss the people...they want Outsiders at Thanksgiving as much as the turkey!
5. How has Outsiders CrossFit impacted your mindset about working out?
My mindset is...I sign up and I show up...PERIOD. I do not skip out...I do not talk myself out of it. I have never once regretted showing up. I feel incredible every single time. I am super proud of myself. :) I look forward to being there, and I do not make excuses as to why I can't go.
6. What is one tip you would give someone considering or just getting started a Outsiders?
Appreciate your victories. Honor your body...it is ok if you are last...it is ok if you have the lightest weight on the bar...it is ok if you "can't do." Because there is a modification you can do. And then, when you reach that victory, there are very few feelings like that.
7. Has joining Outsiders influenced your life outside of the gym?
I just feel so much stronger. I feel in control of my 50 year old body...it is not going to control me. I have also developed a whole new vocabulary!!
8. Talk about your results since joining Outsiders?
Mostly, I know I am stronger. Yes, I have lost weight, yes, I have lost inches. For me, it is about the confidence I have gained about doing things I may shy away from before. The biggest result is the feel of control and power I have.
