November Athletes of the Month - Gen and Drew McQuaid

Published November 17, 2014

Gen and Drew have been at Outsiders since our very first month of being open.  They have been so supportive and have helped to shape the unbelieviable community that we now have.  They came to our box as active people but continue to become fitter and healthier through their consistancy and positive outlook.  Their engery is infectious to everyone who knows them.

1.Were you active prior to CrossFit? Traditional exercise like running, lifting.

Drew - It had been a while since exercising with any kind of passion.
Gen - Yes, lots of running, triathlons, and the occasional class such as spin or Body Pump

2. When did you first start doing CrossFit?

Drew - Beginning of 2013
Gen - We tried a few classes on and off at different boxes in 2012....I liked the workouts but  had still not found the perfect fit. We had recently moved to the Sparks area and I heard through the grapevine there was  a new box opening nearby (Outsiders). In the Fall of 2012 I checked it out and loved it but I really wanted Drew's buy-in before joining. In January 2013 Drew signed up for his first workout at Outsiders and we have been members ever since!

3. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

Drew - I need to get in shape - damn!
Gen -  I could not wait for the next one and I still feel like that each and every day.

4. What do you enjoy the most about CrossFit? -

Drew - Varied and flexible.  Competitive on the days you want it to be.  Fun if not in the mood to crush a workout.
Gen - The list is so very long but if I had to pick one thing it would be the people. I love the's one of the highlights of my day:-)

5. What were your goals when you first started?

Drew - It took some time to develop real goals within my Cross-fit routine.   One great aspect of Cross-fit was that the goal was becoming less about motivating myself to get to the gym - more about blasting out a good result once I got there.
Gen - I wanted to change up my fitness routine and diversify. I tend to be a bit of a scaredy cat so Crossfit offered a good challenge for me physically, mentally, and emotionally. Just the thought of rope climbs, hand stand push ups, and even box jumps terrified me in the beginning but now they are like second nature...I love that!!

What are they now?

Drew - Some days to PR a previous workout.  Other days, survive.   Overall to get stronger and healthier.
Gen - Realistically I  want to positively progress especially with my gymnastic movements and Olympic lifting techniques. A far reaching goal would be to eventually become a serious masters competitor, but that's a few years off;-)

6. What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

Drew - Back in the days of the meathead gym, everybody liked the Bench Press and the Preacher Curl because it looked cool and it was easy to get good at.  Those days are over.  Cross-fit is more about doing movements you may not be great at so you can get better at them.  Constant state of humility and growth.
Gen -  That's a tough one because I like them all but I guess if I had to pick one it would be the burpees....yay burpees!!

7. What is your least favorite movement?

Drew - That would have to be the Overhead Squat….and double unders and hand-stand push ups….and……….burpees and……...
Gen - I don't have a least favorite movement but the ones that challenge me the most are Olympic lifts especially snatches and overhead squats.

8. What is one tip you would give someone considering CrossFit or a new CrossFitter?

Drew - Be prepared to become humbled during the first few WODS.  Then prepare to get strong.
Gen - Take it from a scaredy cat don't let your imagined fears get in the way. You would be amazed what the  human body is capable of achieving when  you let go of fear!

9.Talk about your results from doing CrossFit?

Drew -  In the past two years, Cross-fit has become an important and integral part of my life.  Aside from the enormous gains I have made in strength, stamina and mobility, my wife and I have gained a great group of friends.    I still have a long way to go and have mastered little, but strive every day to improve.
Gen - There are the obvious physical results that I have attained through Crossfit such as increased energy, stamina, strength, mobility, and endurance, which are all wonderful! However the greatest results for me are those of a personal nature. This may sound corny but I feel like Crossfit challenges me on a daily basis to be a better person. I am no longer satisfied with the status quo as I find myself striving for more out of life through both my personal and professional interactions.
